Helvetica and Typography

s we know, helvetica is as popular as English in a world-wide range in the typeface world. The documentary which we saw shows us the evolution of helvetica and typography in western world.

As a matter of fact, this film and the “development” of western font does not affect a student from China, like me, as much as my “western classsmates”. As soon as I realise what the documentary talked about, I can’t find what makes me so exciting.

According to the documentary, people started to develop different fonts of typefaces absed on their “personality”. Some people think letters has life,which I couldn’t agree more by the way. So, some people started to create different shapes of 26 Alphabet letters to make more meaningful. And some people started to put letters into iamges to create new art form (typography).

Actually, in ancient China, people like artist and poets has already started this explore, and eventually bulit a system. Different artists has his own font which can represent one’s personaliy, knowledge and qi (like force inside human body). And typography just like China’s Pictograph in 5000-6000 years ago (according to known archaeological finds). Indeed, people are trying to catch up with the ancients. What a fun! The more funny thing is, there are many students in China learning typography based on western artistic knowledge. What a Shame! In one sentence, what we are doing now is art, so, be yourself, not a copier.

This is a post of mini series "Band of Brothers".

This piece work is trying ot tell us this series is about battlafield and its tence, base on the dark, grey background(land, sky, clouds etc.). The title of "band of brothers" is clearly presented by balck and white, let us know what we are looking for.

The story is about soldiers of US 101th airborne during the WWII. It's not only about battle fight or action, but also about justice, brave, hounor and love. Soldiers from EASY were people just like us. However they were the best soldiers in combet.

The idea that put 13 soldiers between heavy clouds and black earth impress me. There is line by Lt. Winters, "We are airborne, we should be surrounded." The heavy grey clouds and black earth just like Nazis surrounded them in the war. And the only one they can dependent on is the man next to them.

Also the layout built a distance between these soldiers and us, but we can still see them, which means the story is long ago, but still rememberable.
